How to keep your Michigan Garage Door Clean

Garage doors are not just a way to get your car in and out your garage, they are usually a part of the appearance of your home too. Keeping your garage door looking nice is great for how your property looks, but it can also help with keeping it working properly over time as well.

Canton has more varied conditions over the year than many areas of the country, and that is something we all learn to live with in Michigan. But when it comes to your keeping your garage door clean, it does mean there are some things to keep in mind.

Don’t Use a Pressure Washer

Many of us have portable pressure washers these days, they are great for cleaning your car or truck, and have made keeping patios clean so much easier. But even if you do have one, that is not the way to clean your garage door.

They are too powerful, and you run the risk of damaging the surface or paint on a garage door, so stick to a normal hosepipe when it comes time to clean your garage door.

Get Going Early in The Summer

A garage door is a giant, flat heat sink, especially if yours is painted in dark colors. Canton doesn’t get especially warm in summer, but over time your garage door will absorb a lot of heat during the day, and that can make washing very difficult. The heat breaks down the chemicals in the soap so it leaves a chalky residue all over the door, and that means starting again.

If you need to wash your Michigan garage door in summer, do it as early in the morning as you can before the door has heated up too much.

Get The Loose Stuff Off First

Before you wash your door, get any loose debris off first by spraying it down with clean water from a hose. While garage doors are robust, the surface can be scratched by leaves, salt and other debris if it is scrubbed into the surface, so a quick wash down shakes all that off before you clean anything.

Washing it Down

You don’t need to use anything special here. A bucket of soapy water and a sponge will get the job done. Start at the top and wash down the door. Then simply hose it all down to avoid any marks. After that, you can dry it off with a towel, and add a spray wax, the stuff used for cars, to add a little shine, protect the paint and stop dirt sticking to it again.

How often?

You should probably clean your door a couple of times a year. For Michigan, washing it in spring after the snow and cold weather has gone, and then in fall just before the cold returns again makes the most sense.

Washing is also a good opportunity to check your garage door for any signs of damage or wear and tear. If it needs some work, Sam’s Garage Door Services provide a comprehensive range of maintenance, repair and installation solutions to keep your garage door operating smoothly and safely.
